344. Om ksaya-vrddhi-vinirmuktayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is free from growth and decay.
Amma is not a physical body, She is the best thought we have ever had, the finest fragrance we have ever smelt, the most beautiful sight we have ever seen, the calmest we have ever felt, the softest touch we have ever had. She is not a body but a soul. She is the sum total of all the good in the world; of all the good we are supposed to reflect and feel. The world is Amma's oyster because She has opened Her heart to each of us. Amma never judges our actions. She accepts us as we are, with all our faults and follies. Amma welcomes us into Her arms without asking us any questions or partiality. Each of us is one in Her eyes. Which is why a greta Mahatma like Amma will always be free from growth and decay. Amma isn't a body. She's the finest divinity the Universe has ever known.

Our true faith!
343. Om ksetra-ksetrajna-palinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the protector and knower of matter, thus the protector of body and soul
The ultimate protector of each of us, Amma is a true Mother who looks out for Her children. But today when I was speaking to a fellow devotee, I told her how I have been having doubts about Amma's love for me. I have been having doubts about whether Amma even knows what problems I have had. I intend to ask Her why She has put me through such a hard time. And we both stood by a door giving our own explanations. Karma. Test. Divine ways. Protection in another way. The universe's way of making sure we never forget God. Etc.
The truth though I think, is that we are the ones who lose faith so easily. We are the ones who see a high tide and imagine a tsunami. Some days it feels like a tsunami and even seems like one but Amma's tidal wave of love will take care of each of us. Let us have the strength to move forward in such a way.

The most beautiful union!
342. Om ksetresyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the wife of Shiva, the Lord of matter and the body of all beings.
I have always loved Amma's connection to Lord Shiva. There's something so complete and so universal in this union. And every time at the Shiva temple, when I see the holy triumvirate of Shiva, Amma and Ganesha, it gives me a feeling of everything being right with the world. It's like a wall of spirituality that filters the bad and only lets in the good. I guess that's why people go to temples and ashrams even though God is omnipresent. To feel the presence of this incredible wall. This palpable presence. This throbbing pulse of divinity. Religion in many ways, when looked at from the correct perspective, is a lot of what we allow to grow within us. The goodness, the virtues within. Amma and Lord Shiva are projections of these virtues. The universe projects Love towards all of humanity in the form of Amma. Lord Shiva is the lord of matter and the body of all beings. The God for whom time stands still as He seeks to destroy the vices of the world. Amma, for whom the world stops, as She reaches out and embraces all of humanity in Her warm, ever loving hug. What a beautiful, joyful union!

A flower in the wasteland of our lives!
341. Om ksetra-svarupayai namah: I bow down to Amma whose body is matter
With Amma nothing else matters except the continuous flow of love. She is very embodiment of love. How fortunate we are that amidst us lives a Guru who is not only a guiding force but also a God; who teaches us how to live life; whose every word is a prayer to the universe. On a recent tour in America, a devotee said that Amma's presence has brought fragrance to our lives. How true that is. Everything we think, say and do is now tinged with this very fragrance. This fragrance fills our lives and hearts. But I digress! The question that the devotee asked of Amma was how could one bring this fragrance to the west, where the children were suffering so much from drugs and violence.
Amma's response: "You can make a difference if you really want to. It is human nature to imitate the people we look up to. This is why we see so many people imitating the fashion and looks of certain athletes and movie stars. Understanding this, everyone should try to become a good role model because, no matter who we are, there is definitely someone, somewhere, watching and imitating us. First and foremost, we must set a good example in our homes for our own children because people pick up almost all of their good and bad qualities from their home. So, parents must lay a strong foundation of values for their children by living those values themselves.

First and foremost, we must set a good example in our homes for our own children because people pick up almost all of their good and bad qualities from their home. So, parents must lay a strong foundation of values for their children by living those values themselves.
One thing you can do to help the youth is to form small groups and visit houses. Maybe you can visit 10 houses a day and counsel the children there. Talk to them, advise them, give them some spiritual teachings. Help them to recognise their weaknesses and to understand the potential consequences of their destructive behaviour. In this way, you can help the children cultivate awareness. A diabetic may take medicine, but if they keep eating sweets, their sugar level will still remain high. This shows us that dietary awareness is just as important as taking medicine, if not more so. So, we need to help children cultivate awareness of the potential consequences of destructive habits. They need the basic knowledge, but they also need awareness and good judgment.
Tribal children from places in Northern Kerala, like Attappadi, used to regularly be brought to study at our ashram’s boarding school in Parippally. We would take care of them and give them a proper education. But they would often steal small things, like cooking vessels, and then run away back to their tribal villages. They were used to spending their days wandering in the forests, picking flowers and fruits and climbing trees. They were not used to being educated formally in a classroom. Seeing this, Amma decided it would be better to set up small one-room classrooms in their forest villages. Let the kids come and go to these schools as they please. This way, these tribal children began to slowly develop a taste for education. They started to see its importance. Then they would gradually come to the school more and more and more. Ultimately, some of these children have even gone on to become engineers. So, it is possible to gradually create awareness and appreciation in children of things that they may initially not like but are, ultimately, for their own good. Like that, if you form small groups and visit houses and offer some spiritual education, it will definitely have a gradual effect.
Many children, when they are about 15, confess to Amma that their classmates and friends tell them that studying is a waste of time. They tell them to just make quick money stealing or selling drugs. And the youth present the ability to steal and sell drugs as if they were some great talent. This is what is being taught by the world today. So, we must cultivate awareness in our children. Our youth are like flower buds that are meant to one day bloom and spread fragrance to the world. Today, it is as if they are being eaten away by pests. If we don’t want these flowers to be totally destroyed, we must educate them and help them cultivate proper awareness.
Remember, we may not be able to make a monumental change in society, but if we can save even one child, it is a big thing. If only one flower blooms in a wasteland, at least that much beauty is created. If only one tree grows there, at least that much shade is provided. If we can make a change in just one out of 100 children, that is a great accomplishment, and it will have its impact on society. If at first you don’t see any change, don’t get diffident. It will have an effect. A change will come."
Yes Amma, it will. With one Guru, so many millions of lives have been touched. You are the flower that has bloomed in the wasteland of our hearts and what a difference it has made in our lives!

Engulfed in Her love!
340. Om vilasinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is playful
One of the reasons Amma is such a favorite with all Her children, is Her absolute child like innocence. When She smiles, it's like the sweetest smile in the whole wide world. When She hugs us, it's like there could never be a hug more affectionate and loving. When She reaches out towards us, it's like no one ever could reach out with greater compassion for us. And the truth is that nothing can ever match Amma's words or actions. She is purity in every form and in every way. This is the reason we are so spiritually attracted to Her. Amma is what nature intended for all of us to be: pure, innocent and loving. We are born with a purity which we very swiftly lose along the path of growing up. And it is upto mahatmas like Amma to guide us back to the real path. Amma helps us on our journey of self realization; of finding our true self. The beauty is that Amma doesn't do this by making us follow a strict code of spiritual conduct but purely through engulfing us in Her unadulterated love.

Amma, all I can think of is how soon I will FINALLY be in Your arms. You will hold me in Your circle of love and wash away the weariness of all these months. You will whisper the magic of life to me and that will keep me going till I see You again. I will wait patiently as You enter the hall and without warning, the tears will flow. The tears that burn hot with the sadness of not having seen You for months. The tears that give away how weak I have been these past few months. The tears that reveal how much I have doubted You these many weeks. The tears that will show You just how much You mean to me. And while I sit somewhere and the emotions take over, a calm will descend over the hall as everyone will finally feel the peace. A peace that only Your presence can provide. Finally.

A compassionate Mother to all!
338. Om veda-jananyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the Mother of the vedas
Amma isn't just the Mother of the vedas, She is also the Mother of the universe. Amma is able to reach out with the highest levels of love and compassion, to each one of us. Sometimes I know as devotees we feel a sense of child like ownership of Amma but the truth is She is everyone's Mother just as much as She is mine and yours....as this incredible story given below illustrates! A survivor of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake shares her experience
My name is Laxmi. As a child, I lived with my family in Gujarat. On January 26, 2001, an earthquake hit our lives. I saw our apartment collapse right before my eyes. I could only see dust and debris everywhere. I heard a lot of people moaning and saw them running in search of their beloved ones. I was also among them, searching for my mother and my elder brother. Both of them were trapped in our apartment, which was then nothing but bricks and rubble. On that day itself, I lost both of them, as well as my home and my friends. Needless to say, for a 13-year-old girl, it was devastating.
My father was not a witness to this incident. He was at work at the time witnessing another tragedy, the total destruction of his business. He did not know how to console me or himself, other than sharing this with our Amma. With everything in our lives destroyed, we travelled to Kerala and reached Amma’s ashram during the first week of February with the ashes of my mother and brother.{news} Amma called us into her room. She consoled us and she wiped away my tears. She hugged me and told me not to worry about anything, that she would always be with me. In that moment, I stopped feeling that I had lost my mother. I realized that Amma was the only one who could take away my sorrow. Amma discussed about my studies and decided to enroll me in Amrita Vidyalayam in Kodungallur. She told me that I could study in Amma’s institutions for as long as I needed. She told me that whenever I needed any clothes—or anything at all, for that matter—that I should just tell her.
All this time I was experiencing Amma’s vast love and compassion. A few months later, when the North Indian Tour came around, Amma asked me to come along so that I could continue to be near her during this critical time in my life. She made me realize that I was not alone.
Soon, my father went back to Gujarat in order to try to rebuild his business. And I continued my schooling. Since I had some difficulties with my academics in Kodungalloor, Amma suggested I attend the Amrita Vidyalayam Secondary School in Parippally. The school is located right next to the ashram’s Amrita Niketan orphanage. Many of the children who attend there live at Amrita Niketan and, therefore, have either lost their parents or were abandoned by them. Other students have parents who are financially unable to care for them. While I attended the school there, Amma told me that I should talk with the orphans and listen to their stories. This helped me to overcome my feelings and to understand that I was not the only person suffering. In fact, there are many kids in situations worse than mine.

This helped me to overcome my feelings and to understand that I was not the only person suffering. In fact, there are many kids in situations worse than mine.
After a year, something I never expected happened: my father re-married and informed via phone. At the time was finishing my 11th standard exams and was quite devastated. As I was still recovering from losing my mother and brother, his marriage really shook me. I went to share my feelings with Amma, but before I could even speak, she hugged me, wiped my tears and told me, “Dear daughter, don’t worry, Amma is always with you.” Her words gave me enough hope and confidence to move forward. Yes, Amma is there with me always.
When I finished my basic schooling, Amma encouraged me to get my BBM (Bachelor’s of Business Management) degree at the Amrita School of Arts & Sciences at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Once, again, my education and accommodation were provided by Amma totally free of charge. With Amma’s grace and support, I successfully graduated.
After my graduation, I wanted to work for one of the ashram’s institutions, but, to my surprise, Amma instructed me to work outside. Since I believe that no place is safer than Amma’s ashram, I asked Amma many times, if I could please work at Amrita itself. However, Amma was particular that I should work outside. Amma told me, “My dear daughter, Amma wants you to work outside so that you will gain a better understanding about the outside world. I want you to be strong and independent.” Her words gave me strength and, with the confidence she had instilled in me, I soon found a job with a multinational company. When I first began working there, Amma advised me about my accommodation, my travel—even about day-to-day things. She also told me to save as much of my salary as I could for my future.
When I shared my wish to get engaged to the person of my choice, Amma called him and his family to discuss the matter, just like a girl’s parents do. Amma said that when we were ready, she would conduct the wedding for us. The happy day was today: May 13, 2014 during a public darshan. Sadly, my father was against the marriage and didn’t attend. However, Amma was my family support on this day.
After reaching the ashram, Amma lovingly called me and personally selected the ornaments and sari for the wedding. She attended to every detail just like my own family would. The ashramites took care of me and I felt like I was at home again. All the sadness of my father not being there was removed by the love and support of Amma and the ashramites.
The wedding was such a joyous occasion in my life. The whole ashram, Amma, the senior Swamijis and the ashramites showered us with blessings, best wishes and prayers. Traditionally, the father would take the daughter’s hand and placing it in the groom’s hand, give him the responsibility of his daughter. In my case, Amma who is the Universal Mother and Father, lovingly performed this rite, gave my hand to Bimal. After the wedding, Amma made an announcement requesting everyone present to pray for our family and to give their blessings for our new life. It was so touching for everyone present to witness the depth of Amma’s love and compassion; that even in starting a new married life, Amma was showering us with spiritual blessings. Amma even told us to take our honeymoon vacation in Singapore.
Amma has given me so much love and care that, even though I lost my biological mother, I have never felt alone. Every moment I feel Amma’s presence, and that gives me so much strength and happiness. Amma has transformed my life and the lives of so many others. All these experiences given by Amma has made me feel like the luckiest person in the world. They say that where there is love, that place is heaven on earth. This has been my experience: Yes, Amritapuri is the real heaven on earth.

A oneness in the world!
337. Om vidhatryai namah: I bow down to Amma who creates and sustains this universe.
I found this article which quoted Amma's answer on how to avoid sorrow. I read it and re-read it thoroughly. For a while I was foxed because I couldn't quite figure out exactly what instructions Amma was giving us to avoid sorrow. I think the key word here is attachment. When we attach our self worth to someone else, sorrow follows. When we attach our spiritual satisfaction to someone else, sorrow follows. I think what Amma is stating is that we need to find our strength and happiness from within. And for that, we also need to realise that we are all one. No one is different from 'me'. Then, everything becomes a shared experience. There is no 'us' and 'them'. We are a collective whole who beat with the same rhythm and live under the same umbrella of our gorgeous Amma's grace! What a beautiful universe Amma has created for us!
"Amma: When we say “no one is my own,” then “everyone is my own, everyone is an extension of my True Self” is also implied. If we place 100 pots of water out in the sun, we will see a reflection of the sun in each and every pot. But, in reality, there are not 100 suns; there is only one sun. Similarly, it is the one and same consciousness that is manifesting in all beings.

Why do the scriptures and gurus say that everything is one? Because they don’t want us to be sad or depressed, and they know that understanding this fact—which is the truth—will put an end to that sorrow. When we think that we are the limited body-mind complex, then it is only natural that we will be insecure and afraid. And from this insecurity, we will become dependent upon other people. This leads to attachment and sorrow. Our very existence becomes based upon the words and action of others. If they praise us, we soar up to the heavens in happiness. If they criticize us, we fall down to the floor in sorrow. Mahatmas want us to be free of such dependence, and they know that in order to go beyond it that understanding these spiritual truths is essential.
Once a king had a dream that he was a butterfly, blissfully flying here and there. When he awoke, he was confused. He kept asking himself, “Am I a king who dreamt he was a butterfly? Or a butterfly who is dreaming he is a king?” In his confusion, he went to a guru. And the guru said, “You are neither a butterfly nor a king. You are pure consciousness, pure awareness. It is within that awareness that is you that both experiences have taken place. The atma is the only truth. Both the butterfly and the king are dreams.”
Children, we must awaken to this understanding. Then we can see our oneness with others. We must see others as our own Self. That is the only way to overcome the sorrow we are currently experiencing. Amma knows this is not easy, but it is possible with constant practice. Just as we have learned to identify with this name, we need to learn to identify with our True Self"

Amma in our hearts!
336. Om vindhyacala-nivasinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who resides in the Vindhya mountains
The one place I hope to make Amma reside in, is my heart. I know Amma lives in our hearts but for me that is more a spiritual saying than a fact! Is our heart actually clean enough to seat Amma? Just as we clean Amma's physical seat, so also we must cleanse our hearts. When we live in this materialistic world, I sometimes wonder if it is possible. There's so much to contend with - so many different types of people who arrive at our doorsteps to challenge and test us; so many situations that puts our character to the test - is it always possible to maintain the cleanest of the clean hearts? How can we totally accept everything that comes our way as Amma always advises us? The answer lies in the destruction of the ego. When we can learn to stop thinking of ourselves as powerful in the least, that is when the ego will die a quiet death. Even faith is a question of killing the ego. The day the ego leaves us, our faith will be complete. Till then we will always think that maybe God isn't really looking after us. Which means that we are wresting all the faith in ourselves. Which isn't a bad thing....but only so long as Amma truly lives in our hearts!

The purpose of life!
335. Om veda-vedyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is known through the vedas
I found this picture on my soul sister's profile picture. And apart from reconnecting me with Bindu across thousands of miles, it reminded me of the times I have gone to Amritapuri and thought of going for beach meditation. But I have never been able to do it. I've never known the timings nor Amma's schedule. My splash and dash visits have never given me time to sit and mull over life. There are so many mysteries to life I sometimes seek the answer for. What exactly is our purpose? If there is a purpose, why isn't it just made clear to us right in the beginning? If not, then that must mean that life's an adventurous journey where the whole point of being here is to find a purpose and to fulfill it. How fortunate we are that the Universe has appointed Amma as our God, Guru and Guiding light! How fortunate that Amma is always there to soothe and comfort us (even when we assume She isn't, like I do sometimes!). Sometimes to see Amma, we just need the right spiritual outlook. Amma isn't just an ordinary woman from Kerala. She's been sent here with a purpose. The purpose to set us on the path of a spiritual journey. To make life bearable. To see all of creation as one.

Amma and life's questions!
334. Om visvadhikayai namah: I bow down to Amma who transcends the universe
One of Amma's bhajans has the beautiful words of longing to Krishna: "When will You come, Krishna, when will You come?"
That's the longing I feel for You, Amma. When will I see You? And when I do, what will I tell You? Will my fears and worries dissolve into a steady stream of burning tears? Will I be able to explain my pain to You? Or would You already know? Would time be so kind as to stop when it's my turn for darshan? Will You hold me in Your arms for a long, long time and assure me that You are always there for me? Or will it be like every other time when I have not needed the words but the mere hug has been sufficient? How must it be like for people like Michael who are following Amma over a period of time? Will he feel a renewed sense of happiness each time he sees Amma? Rejuvenated, refreshed?
The answers to all of life's questions, always lie with Amma.

A blissful existence!
333. Om varuni-mada-vihvalayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is intoxicated by varuni (liquor, soma or bliss)
Jim Carrey: "I was feeling down about life'n'love. Then I met a woman named Ammachi and she gave me back my smile. Darkness can not compete with her. ;^)"
The talented actor tweeted this nearly a year ago. Today I heard him address the students of the Maharishi University of Management. And everything he spoke was like Amma's satsang. It was beautiful. His thoughts on how to drive fear away from our minds was like a lesson Amma was sending me. He is obviously a more realized soul than I am. He has truly encapsulated everything that spirituality and divinity means in this world. His take on hope and faith was very revealing: "hope is like walking through the fire and faith, is leaping over it." Life is really all about giving your intent or desire out to the universe and then not worrying about the process but waiting for the result - not in the 'hope' that it will but keeping the 'faith' that it will.
I want to walk ahead not just hoping, but knowing that Amma will always be there to hold the umbrella of grace over me. And then I will finally feel the bliss.

Those beautiful eyes!
332. Om vama-nayanayai namah: I bow down to Amma who has beautiful eyes
Amma does have beautiful eyes. They are brimming with love and compassion for all. They're also full of naughtiness and laughter. They radiate the universal divinity! I am waiting to look into those eyes and ask Amma why life's taken the many turns it has. Some turns have been fantastic and some have surprised me. But Amma always knows the bigger plan because She sees what we can never see. She sees how we are inter related; how we can actually be connected to one another. She sees the spiritual web we weave as we traverse life. Through Her beautiful eyes, Amma sees everything including the deepest thoughts hidden in our soul. But why have You forgotten me, Amma? Why do You not have the time to look into my soul and see what lies within? I really want to melt in Your arms and totally surrender at Your feet. Please do help me pass this morass, to reach the shores of faith. The shores where I can finally put down the burdens I am carrying and allow You to do Your magic in my life.

The best boon of them all!
331. Om varadayai namah: I bow down to Amma who grants boon generously
Something beautiful I read, which must be shared:
Something beautiful I read, which must be shared:
"In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says as much to Arjuna:'What tastes at first like nectar is usually poison, and what tastes like poison is usually nectar.' We believe that to be truly happy, we need to spend as much time fulfilling our own personal desires as possible. But it is only when we forget ourselves in the service of others that we begin to experience real fulfillment and happiness.
There are many spiritual teachers who will tell us, 'It's all good -- do whatever you feel like doing. Your only job is to express yourself, to manifest whatever is inside you.' But this is not Amma's message. There are problems in the world, and Amma wants us to be part of the solution. That is why she encourages us to reduce our unnecessary spending, and to work an extra half hour a day to raise money for the poor. That is why she says that wasting food is a form of violence. When we are watching TV and we see people suffering in the world, our first instinct may be to change the channel. But Amma says we shouldn't turn a blind eye to the problems in the world. Instead, we should try to do something to solve them. This is not only the right thing to do, it is also the secret to a happy and fulfilling life.
Once, while talking to a reporter, Amma commented that she came to this world to fulfill certain goals that are beneficial to society, and that she has complete faith that she will achieve them. This gives me tremendous hope for the world. But recently, it occurred to me that maybe I should not feel quite so comforted. Amma said she would accomplish what she came for, but didn't say the same thing about us. Whether or not we will accomplish what we came for remains, for most of us, an open question."(Source: http://amma.org/teachings/dedicating-ourselves-serving-others)
I loved this article because many a times I have wondered why Amma is punishing me for having helped someone. But I know now it is our dharma to serve others. And our entire purpose in life should be to look beyond ourselves. If we can truly become selfless, we would have been granted the best boon from Amma!

Crying as a form of meditation!
330. Om kadambari-priyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is fond of mead
I found something truly beautiful on the ammakolkata.org site. It came upon me at a most opportune time - just when my own mother has advised me to start meditating in order to still my restless mind. But what I found even more absorbing was Amma's observation about crying as a form of meditation to the Gods:
I found something truly beautiful on the ammakolkata.org site. It came upon me at a most opportune time - just when my own mother has advised me to start meditating in order to still my restless mind. But what I found even more absorbing was Amma's observation about crying as a form of meditation to the Gods:
Children, crying has the power to make the mind completely one-pointed. Why do we meditate? To get concentration, isn’t that why? Yes. So, the best way to get concentration is by crying to the Lord. That is a very powerful way of remembering God, and that, in fact, is meditation. That is what great devotees like the gopis and Mirabai did. See how selflessly Mirabai prayed, ‘O Mira’s Giridhari (Krishna), it does not matter if You don’t love me. But, O Lord, please do not take away my right to love You.’ They prayed and cried until their whole being was transformed into a state of constant prayer. They kept on worshiping the Lord until they were totally consumed by the flames of divine love. They themselves became the offering. Once you become the offering, once your whole being is in a state of constant prayer, then what is left is not you but Him. What is left is love. Prayer can perform this miracle. Crying can accomplish this feat. What is the purpose of meditation? It is to become love. It is to attain oneness. Thus there is no better meditation technique than praying and crying to the Lord.
Let the heart melt in prayer. Unfortunate indeed are those who think that crying to God is a weakness. As the wax melts, the flame of a candle only burns brighter. Through crying to God, one gains strength. These tears wash away the impurities of the mind. If one cries for God for five minutes, it is equal to one hour of meditation. Such crying makes the mind easily absorbed in the remembrance of God.
Om Amriteswariye namah! Those who meditate only according to a timetable, as if it were a duty, will never see God. You have to cry for God, day and night, with no thought of food or sleep. You have to develop that kind of detachment. If someone smeared chili paste all over your body, think of how you would struggle to escape the burning! You should pine to see God with the same intensity. You should cry for that vision, without wasting even an instant. Only then, will all other thoughts disappear, as in deep sleep, and you will reach the plane of divine experience.

My beautiful Mother!
329. Om kantayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is beautiful
There is beauty in everything in the world. And divinity is essentially finding purity and beauty in everything around us. I wonder how atheists see the world. I'm sure they admire nature by seeing it as part of an evolution process and not as a miracle created by the higher energy. Somedays I feel it is better to be an atheist and not put your faith in a God who seems to abandon you every now and again. Maybe it's better to keep my faith in myself. But I could never be an atheist because I have rarely been able to take even a step without Amma's blessing. So now when I find everything bleak around me, it is unfair to think Amma has abandoned me. I hope She will never do that. I hope my beautiful Mother knows that my world revolves around Her. Everything I do is with the intent of pleasing Her. All I ask is for Amma to keep Her hand of grace and compassion on me and my loved ones always!

Purity, kindness and a miracle!
328. Om kalalapayai namah: I bow down to Amma who speaks musically and sweetly
Many moons ago I had written about Amma's voice. I have never heard that kind of a voice ever. It's special and very specific to Amma. It's a kind of voice that you could never confuse with anyone else's. Amma's voice is laced with Love. There is no judging us or even holding us responsible for our bad times. Amma prays for all of us and loves each of us unconditionally. Today I was thinking of some of the horrid things Amma's detractors have said about Her. It's so laughable. And petty. Amma has changed the thinking of millions of people. She's added such a valuable thread of spirituality in our lives. She's made us start and end our day with prayer. She's made religion not about worshipping anything or anybody (including Her!) but about being righteous and good. She's made faith not about making deals with God but about unconditionally letting go. She's made spirituality not about holding God responsible but about having faith in ourselves and in a higher being. How beautiful is it that when we go for a mantra to Amma, She never insists on giving us only a mantra with Her name on it. It is a mantra pertaining to our ishta devata. The frenzy we see around Amma isn't created by Her. Amma never propagates Herself. It is the frenzy we create. When we bow down in reverence, we aren't doing it because Amma has ordered us to. We are doing it because we are surrendering our ego to Amma. We are happy to do it. So here are my humble two cents to all Her detractors: Amma isn't a "Godwoman". She's a GURU. She's there to show us the path ahead. She has never asked us to bow and scrape in front of Her. Amma has NEVER claimed to be God. She prays TO God. It is we who have given Her a Godly status in our lives - and it works for us! She only wants to hug us with Her unconditional love. No one is obligated to get a hug. There are no rules when it comes to Amma. There is only purity and kindness. And of course, a miracle of the universe!

327. Om kalavatyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the embodiment of all arts
My brother Michael is in America, following Amma in Her tours. He saw our divine Mother today in Devi bhava. Here are some of his interpretations and excerpts from our beloved Amma's satsang:
"The Good and the bad - or rather, our experience of it - is based upon that which we plant (the seeds we sow); our mind is ultimately the cause of happiness and sadness, joy and sorrow
Why are we living? We need to find the answer to this question to live a fulfilled life; a country's GDP is not a good measure of its success; without spiritual values, our actions are like putting make-up on a corpse
We shall not become slaves of the technology we've created; there are treatment facilities for the addictions to electronic gadgets!
With our continual pursuit of happiness from external objects, we're like bees looking for honey and always landing on artificial flowers
Every emotion has it's own vibration. For example, Anger is like a mosquito which carries malaria;
Karmic balance has an influence on this life; karmic laws are cyclic; death is simply a period at the end of a sentence. Laws of karma are very complex; there is a delay between actions and results, hence we many times do not make the connection between deeds and consequences.
Intent on the goal is extremely important - i.e. mountain climbers looking at death straight on, yet their strong focus on the goal helps them avoid the danger
Meditation is like gold - it helps us still the mind which is essential to be successful
Distance has no effect on love; the sun continues to provide for the lotus flowers, despite its distance; We need to keep the 'mobile phone' of mantra japa with us and in use at all times
Spiritual practices and compassion are not two, but one." How can anything have duality in Amma's presence. Amma is one with the universe. At Her feet lies the entire universe!

An ocean of compassion!
326. Om karuna-rasa-sagarayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the ocean of compassion
This mantra is the answer to: How does Amma sit for hours on end giving thousands of people darshan? Because She is the ocean of compassion. She is the pool where we can pour in our sorrows and burdens and Amma will take care of it. She is the road we can lay down our heavy luggage and breathe easy. Amma is not only the ocean of compassion, She is also the architect of the world. So when we are going through difficulties, Amma is always there for us. Total surrender in Amma is the only way forward. So many of Amma's devotees have surrendered everything at Her feet. And they lead happy lives because they know that absolutely everything happens only because of Amma's grace. May we always stay in remembrance of this fact!

The very root of our world!
325. Om jagati-kandayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the root of the whole world
Well, for all of Her devotees, Amma is the very foundation of our world. Everything is surrendered at Her feet. It is the perfect way to forge ahead in life. I always realize how fortunate those children are whose parents are already Amma devotees. They know of Amma from birth itself. What a blessed life that is! For those of us who have only come to know Amma either in our teens or 20s or later, the faith may not always be that steadfast. But this is obviously not true for everyone. Sometimes when the going gets tough, I find my faith rather shaky. Someday very soon I will get Amma's darshan. That's when I intend to melt in Her arms and ask Her: why me? But the spiritually correct way to approach it would be to not just see the negatives that happen but also the positives - For Amma's presence in my life. Why me, Amma? How did the universe decide to bestow such grace on me?! I have to keep the faith. At all times. Today and forever because Amma truly is the root of our world.

Our right destination!
324. Om kalyanyai namah: I bow down to Amma who bestows auspiciousness
I was reading Amma's thoughts on the negativities in our lives and to see everything that comes our way as prasad. Amma Herself says that it is not an easy thing to do but with practice, we will feel the oneness with the world. It has to be the most difficult thing to do - ever! Because when one is in the depths of despair, it is extremely difficult to see it as prasad. A very common wonder would be: why me? what have I done to deserve this? The universe isn't about to answer our queries but in the larger scheme of things, there must be some reason why Amma puts us through the grind. As we go through the many ups and downs She bestows on us, the thing to do is possibly swim with the tide. I am reminded of something as sweet as the voice of Ellen de Generes playing Dory and stating rather profoundly, in "Finding Nemo": 'What should we do when life gets you down? Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming'. There we have it. We just need to keep swimming in the ocean of Amma's grace. Somewhere, somehow, we will find that the current will take us to our right destination.

The true puja bhava!
323. Om kadamba-kusuma-priyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is especially fond of kadamba flowers
When I read the following article, I knew Amma had answered a very vital question for me: (The following is an article in www.amritapuri.org)
When I read the following article, I knew Amma had answered a very vital question for me: (The following is an article in www.amritapuri.org)
It was the day before Amma would leave on her two-month Japan-North America Tour. Amma was meeting all the ashramites in the Kali Temple for a final meeting. After addressing several administrative- and seva-related matters, Amma suddenly raised a question: “What is the relevance in doing puja?” Apparently, someone had made a comment that puja [ritualistic worship] was not necessary in an ashram where the focus is atma-vicara—contemplation on the Self.
Amma said, “When we are children, we learn what a parrot is by being referred to a picture. Once we learn, the picture is no longer required. Similarly, every learning process has multiple steps. So, puja is yet another way to focus on the universal consciousness.”
Amma then asked some brahmacharis who perform puja as a form of selfless service to speak from their experience. One of them said that Amma had always told him that it was the attitude with which he performed puja that was the most important thing. “Doing puja with the right attitude brings happiness to both the pujari and to the one who has requested the puja,” he said. “When we perform puja, we begin with samarpanam—where we dedicate the worship to the universal consciousness. When we perform puja in this manner, we find that stillness of mind is created. Even in ashrams solely devoted to studying Advaita, puja is accepted as a step to obtaining mental purity.”
“That’s correct,” Amma said. “Advaita is the foundation. “Even Sri Sankaracharya, who propounded Advaita, consecrated so many temples where puja was to be performed. He never rejected puja. The aim of puja is to help us gain control over our mind. Just like mantra japa, puja is also a way to put forth effort. If one says doing puja is against Advaita because it involves identification with doer-ship, then mantra japa is also against Advaita. With such logic, a so-called Advaitin cannot do japa or pray. Don’t all of those spiritual practices involve duality? Without duality, there can be neither guru nor disciple. There isn’t even any scope to contemplate “I am the Atma” because, in such contemplation, there still a limited individual thinking—isn’t it? Even in mananam [Vedantic reflection], there is duality.”
Amma then began speaking about the Brahmasthanam Temples built by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math and consecrated by Amma. “The Brahmasthanam temples were constructed because devotees wanted to do something that would help reverse the decline of people maintaining puja rooms in their homes,” she said. “The idea is that they are places where devotees can gather, participate directly in the worship, hear some satsang, share food as prasad and provide opportunities for people to help the downtrodden—help poor village children get educations, provide care for neglected elderly… This is why Amma set up those temples. But don’t forget the foundation, which is that the puja is a means to gain mental purity.”
Amma then continued saying, “We need to see life itself as a form of puja. Live with that puja bhava—the attitude of seeing all your actions as worship and accepting all the experiences that come to you in life as prasad. Knowing that everyone and everything is a manifestation of the Atman, regardless of whether someone scolds you or praises you—that is verily Advaita. We need to cultivate the ability to accept everything as grace. Or cultivate the ability to see the negativities of others as reflections of our own flaws. Such attitudes are puja bhava. Ultimately, puja bhava is seeing the Self, or God, in everything. Even though initially this is difficult, gradually the feeling of oneness arises.
“A staircase is needed only until we reach the higher level. For Amma, there is nothing to reject; everything is accepted in love. Considering the feelings of others, spiritual aspirants should learn to love all, respect all, and feel everyone’s difficulties as their own. Some people do not have the good fortune to have sweetness in their lives. Understanding this, you should share the sweetness you’ve been fortunate to receive with others.
“Like the crow in the parable that could only drink the water in the fluted vase if it dropped rocks in it first, we should invoke god within with the required effort. Gaining control over our mind is the goal. All of the various forms of spiritual practices are means to achieve that common end. So, Amma cannot reject any of them. They were established by the rishis, and the rishis were not fools. Seeing God in all forms, they accepted all forms as appropriate means for helping the mind gain focus. If one looks into the depth of all the various spiritual practices—even just singing bhajans to oneself—you will see that they are not different from the Atma; they are, in fact, keys that open us up to that truth.”

In Amma's light!
322. Om kama-kala-rupayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is in the form of kamakala
In the form of the purest level of divinity, Amma is a beautiful presence in our world. Every year we look forward to seeing our Mother at least once. And the year that we are deprived of Amma's darshan is when we feel the absence most acutely. That's when questions arise in our minds. That's when we allow our emotions to dip down and everything seems bleak. That's when spirituality becomes a religion and prayer becomes a ritual. That deep longing for Amma seems to reach in and wrench our hearts away from our bodies. Hopefully that pain will soon go away. Hopefully soon I will find myself in front of my Mother and ask Her why? Why has She thought it imperative to put me where She has? And then, hopefully, the darkness will ebb. Because I will be in the presence of the Light.

Hopefully soon I will find myself in front of my Mother and ask Her why? Why has She thought it imperative to put me where She has? And then, hopefully, the darkness will ebb. Because I will be in the presence of the Light.

The lessons You teach!
321. Om kamyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is to be desired
For all the any things I do not understand about this world, thank you Amma for You are teaching me a lesson. It is a valuable lesson no doubt and someday I will look back at this period and see exactly what You were hoping for me to learn. But be gentle Dear mother because I am just a child still learning. I do not know how to hold unshakeable faith. I do not know how to stay strong in the midst of all adversities. I do not know how to face the turbulence. I tell myself I am strong but perhaps I haven't built the foundation of my faith strong enough. Perhaps I haven't cemented it with adequate amounts of love? Please give me the grace to do so, Amma. Your love, compassion and grace is desired by all of Your loving children.

Devotion and faith!
320. Om ramana-lampatayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is devoted to the Lord of Her heart, Lord Shiva
Showing us the way yet again, Amma shows Her devotion to Lord Shiva much the same as we should be devoted to Her. But devotion and faith are tricky customers. When the going is good, we find it easy to follow. Our faith stays alive only because of the happiness. When the going gets difficult, the faith stays strong only out of fear. And then when nothing seems to be working, faith slowly begins to bow out of the spiritual equation. Amma is testing us and teaching us to believe. If only there was a magic wand with which we could see the light at the end of the tunnel and thus hold on to our faith. And then again, maybe that's the whole point of faith: to be kept alive in the most difficult of situations. Like a flickering oil lamp at an altar.

The divinity that lies within!
319. Om ramayai namah: I bow down to Amma who gives delight
At the crossroads that I am at right now, I am questioning my spirituality. Given everything that is happening, I am asking myself about my faith. I have been wondering why Amma hasn't helped. Why is Amma silent? And then the answer came to me just like that. Amma always says that divinity lies in each of us. We have to find the answers to life's many questions ourselves. We have to spiritually empower ourselves to answer the tough questions and the tough crossroads we place ourselves in! The answers have to come from within. And it can only come when the mind is clear of all negativity. It can only come when we realise that we are the crossroads we are at because this is exactly where we are supposed to be, for our own growth. And thus will flow Amma's grace.

Your grace will see me through!
318. Om raksasa-ghnyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the slayer of the entire race of demons
If this be true, You will remove evil from the world, Amma. Exactly as You say, if it is our karma to suffer, then it is Your dharma to help. I have asked for help repeatedly. Please help me, Amma. Please do not test me so. You slay the evil all around the world and I know in Your powerful arms lie the weapon to remove the evil and the devilishness of this world.
My faith is being sorely tested. You have given me a big and dark cross to bear. I don't have the energy today but hopefully Your grace will see me through.

Amma, the provider and protector!
317. Om raksa-karyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the protector
Amma is the ultimate protector of all Her children, ensuring their safety and well being. Amma's grace means being under Amma's unquestionable protection. It's the feeling of being wrapped lovingly in Amma's beautiful white robes. She is always here to protect and care for us. I read this beautiful story about a devotee and his faith in Amma: (This is a post from 2010)

I read this beautiful story about a devotee and his faith in Amma: (This is a post from 2010)
"Last Wednesday, I took a road trip with a group of friends to Richmond Hill, 3 miles north of Toronto, Canada. The journey started well and, despite the heavy rains and fog that came late evening, we made it safely to our first rest stop/hotel for the night. The next morning, we had breakfast, gathered our things, said a prayer and left the hotel focused on completing our drive as we wanted to attend a spiritual retreat/event with Amma.
All went well until we had a harrowing rear right tire blow-out on the highway at I-190W (370.2 point/65mph). Even with the tips I learned from Rich and from the road safety guides on what to do here and here, the car spun around twice veering treacherously close to the guide rails that separate oncoming traffic, my companions said it spun a few more times, before I was able to steady the steering wheel and calmly get it off the road to the right shoulder. We were saved by God’s grace; a divine motherly grace helped me use the right tips as a prayerful calm pervaded the car and a steady presence guided us through it all.
There was definitely tremendous grace and divine protection as time stopped, on-coming traffic slowed down and stopped, and nary a 12-18 wheeler was in sight. Keep in mind that I-190 is a very busy highway and there had been steady traffic for miles. As grace would have it, once we pulled over to the right shoulder, the traffic suddenly picked right back up and several 12-18 wheelers whizzed by; reminding us how fortunate we were. The miraculous outcome was not lost on any of us as we uttered words of gratitude."
The steady presence is there in all our lives. We just need to recognize it, place our ultimate faith in Her and then sit back and watch the miracle of life unfold!

Amma, the universe's miracle!
316. Om rati-priyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is fond of Rati; who is served by Rati
Rati, the Hindu Goddess of Love. Amma, the foundation of love in this universe. Even skeptics of Gurus realise Amma isn't just another Guru. We call Her Guru because Amma is humility personified. Amma is actually the very Goddess of Love, of the Universe. She isn't just the one who shows us the path to salvation; She is Salvation. She isn't just the one who puts us on the path to virtues - Amma is the sum total of all the world's virtues Herself. Let us never take Amma's presence in our lives for granted. We are blessed because of whatever reason (I hate the word Karma!) and have been born as Amma's children. She is powerful and mighty in Her spirituality. Forget the fact that physically Amma challenges all human endurance boundaries. Just the fact that Amma is capable of so much unconditional love, for each of us (and we're looking at a number in thousands!) irrespective of color and creed, is a miracle. A miracle that we are all happily a part of!
