142. Om nis-kamayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is without desire
Selflessness is a virtue that Amma has embraced whole heartedly ever since She was born. Her only mission, dharma in life is to love others. To help everyone and wipe away every tear that may ever fall from Her children's eyes is what Amma will always do. This is what defines Amma.
Amma can sit for hours and reach out and hug Her devotees. She has given up every material comfort only so that this life can be dedicated to Her children. Us. She has no desires for Herself. Each microcosm of desire that may ever rise is only for Her children. Each hug Amma gives is wrapped with a thread of desire: to fulfill Her children's wishes. We stand there in that long, snaking queue, with wishes welling up in our hearts. As we reach Amma, we are already asking Amma for peace, money, happiness, calm, a good relationship etc. And Amma grants us everything. Never do we go back empty handed. She will take a sankalpa for our health or our peace of mind; She will reach out and give us an extra apple to take home to our children; She will listen gravely as we recount a sad story. She will give of Herself as much as She can. If it requires Her to sit for hours on end just to put a smile on our faces, She will. If it means that Amma is there giving darshan when we go to sleep and still there when we wake up after a 7 hour rest, so be it. Amma's dedication to our happiness is so incredibly intense. It is so pure. There is no agenda, no planning. Just a simple desire to make us smile and to make our journeys in life worthwhile.
The world has never, ever seen a mahatma like Amma. The world has never witnessed the presence of a selfless soul like Her. There is no celebration of Her achievements. Amma does it quietly, gently. Like the blowing of the breeze. Like everything in nature that only gives of itself and never asks for anything in return. We bow down in gratitude to You, Amma!
