The mighty Oak. And the blade of grass!

139. Om nir-gunayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is beyond all three gunas of nature, namely sattva, rajas and tamas.

Each of our behavior according to ancient science, is governed by the food we eat. Sattvic diets cause our minds to turn inwards and behave in a pure fashion. Rajasic is governed by rich foods that make us rather excitable and agitated. Tamasic creates an indifference in us. A slowness, bordering on inertia. Because we are wordily beings easily influenced even by the food that goes in, we are still living very much on the surface.

But Amma is obviously beyond such categorizations. It matters not if Her surrounding or the food or the company is sattvic, raja sic or tamasic in nature. Amma's core nature is so strongly divine that nothing can sway Her. She is like the blade of grass during a storm. And yet She is like the Oak tree. She can give the impression of moving without actually having stirred. Her soul is stolid. Nothing agitates Her because Her faith in the universal divinity is supreme. She knows the order of the world (After all, She created it!) and is comfortable in the order. It matters not whether the world is undergoing turbulence or peace: Amma's inherent nature will always stay the same. Her dharma is to love us unconditionally and that is what Amma will always do.

Taking yet another leaf from Amma's life, this is exactly how we are meant to be. To be beyond our surrounding. To be able to feel the calmness from within. To be able to pour out so much faith that the Divine order cannot but reach out to fulfill our desires. To stay within the circle and yet not be affected by what's in it. That's the ultimate tribute we can pay our Guru. She has spent every moment of Her life teaching us a detachment from worldliness and an attachment to God. The best way to show our thanks to Amma would be to emulate Her. To show Her that yes, I am not attached. To things worldly or otherwise. The only attachment I know, is to God. For most of us, our Guru is our God. So, to Amma. Nothing else matters. It never has and never will. And that will truly be our best foot forward.

Om Amriteswariye namah!
