An ocean of calm!

141. Om santayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is tranquil

I remember a cute moment from Amma's visit this year. It was the end of the last darshan and Amma had a plane to catch. She called out to the volunteers to hurry up with the darshan queue. And yet She wanted absolutely everyone in the hall, including security personnel, to have Her darshan. Time was ticking by and yet, She waited till everyone had had darshan. In fact, She called out to everyone to come and receive darshan. It was beautiful watching this Goddess, despite a time crunch, making sure that all Her children received darshan. And as She left the hall, She was surrounded by crying faces, grateful faces, happy faces. And in the midst of this emotional sea, stood Amma. Tranquil. Unagitated. Living in that moment. Enjoying the love of Her children.

Amma meets on an average 6000 to 7000 troubled and emotional souls every day. Their stories move Amma deeply. And yet Amma stays tranquil through it all. When I reach Amma through the darshan queue, Amma is unattached to anyone else or anyone's problems. Her entire attention is focussed on me. Never once in all the darshans I have had with Amma, have I ever felt Her attention was diverted or that She seemed preoccupied. Isn't that incredible? This is me, one devotee. It's everyone's story. Millions and millions of them. Which means each moment, Amma is alive to what surrounds Her. She can meet us a year later and remember details. It must stem from that immense and deep tranquility that pervades Her which allows every moment to take on a significance and become embedded deeply in Her mind.

That's exactly how we should lead our lives. Once again, Amma leads by example. Tranquil, peaceful. As much at peace in Her depths as She is on the surface. But this is a tough act to follow. Because it is virtually impossible for us to stick a foot in worldliness and yet remain calm. But for Amma, this is no difficult feat. For Her, life is dictated purely by love. And every virtue like tranquility, is but a by-product of this immense ocean of Love.

Om Amriteswariye namah!
