667. Om nir-dvaitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is without the sense of duality
A powerful quote by Amma which is relevant to everyone: Each time you act selfishly or angrily or greedily you are taking one more holiday, one more day of leave, from the state of perfection, from your eternal freedom.
I think back on all the times I have taken a leave of absence from the much desired spiritual state of perfection. Despite knowing this great truth, I sometimes willingly walk away from the eternal freedom I so desire. Because just for a moment, that anger, that greed, that selfishness seems worth it. But it's all so temporary, isn't it? What good can possibly come of an emotion that won't last long but will leave traces of dirt behind? Each of us battling our own demons. We all have our own set of issues. Why make it willingly worse for others? Let's work at spreading the happiness just as Amma wishes for us to do. In Amma's words:
Children, learn to be content with what you have. Don’t desire what you don’t have or covet what others have. Don’t think that someone else’s pain is nothing compared to your own, or that you would feel much better if only you were in someone else’s shoes. This is not true. Each individual has his own set of problems and worries. You cannot exchange your troubles for someone else’s because you would not be able to bear anyone else’s pain. The same is true of happiness. You find that your neighbor is happier than you, and pray to God to be like him. Yet once you experience his happiness you realize that you actually prayed for the wrong thing. Your neighbor’s happiness and sorrows belong to him. By the same token, your joys and sorrows are yours alone. Realize this truth and be content with what you have. You cannot have more or less than what is intended for you. What you have is what is meant for you.
