Eye on the goal!

677. Om bali-priyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is especially fond of sacrificial offerings

In the twists and turns of Amma's words lies extremely valuable truths. I read this article in www.amritapuri,org. It's from 2004. This is so true...because I do this very often. In the chase for something , I forget the goal and become obsessed with the method instead. Good lesson for the day!
"Today Amma came to give satsang to all the ashramites. One of the first questions put to Her was by a new visitor to the ashram. “Amma,” he said, “When I first came to the ashram I had a wonderful experience. I felt my aajnja chakra [third eye] open up and I attained a divine consciousness. But after five and a half days, the experience left me, and now I am very depressed. What happened?”
Amma began by telling the man that for those five and a half days he had “pushed the button” on the torch [flashlight], and therefore he’d seen “the light.” But whatever he had been doing he must have stopped and thus his experience ended. But that didn’t matter, Amma said, seeing the path before him illumined he can now continue forward inspired and guided by what he had seen.
Such experiences may come, Amma said, but don’t give them too much importance.  Consider them something to inspire you to persevere in your spiritual practices. We should let such experiences come and also let them go. If we don’t let them go, we may find ourselves stuck on them.
Amma said we may experience many things along the path to realisation. Perhaps we will see a blue light or a golden light, etc. But we are not here to chase such experiences.
Amma then told a story about a man who began seeing a green light in his mind while meditating. He became so obsessed with the light that he soon started seeing green lights everywhere he looked. Then one day while driving his car through an intersection, he met with a bad accident because he thought even the red light was green.
Amma concluded be saying that such experiences are not the way to gauge our spiritual progress. This can only be judged by checking our ability to face all situations with equanimity of mind and our ability to always be loving and peaceful towards others."

Innocence and Amma!

676. Om brahmanandayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is ever immersed in the bliss of Brahman.

I am ever immersed in the bliss of Amma. And thankfully, Amma has let the child within me stay right there where it belongs. This helps me enjoy all of Amma's leelas!
Innocence is within you, hidden deep inside. You have to rediscover it. And for this to happen, you must go deeper and deeper into your spiritual practices. When you can dive deep into your own consciousness, you will realize this innocence one day. At that moment you will discover the child within you. You will experience the innocence, the joy and the wonder that were hidden inside of you, and you will realize they were always there. You merely forgot your innocence for some time. It is as if you suddenly remember something after having forgotten about it for a very long time. That childlike innocence deep within you is God.: AMMA

In God's hands!

675. Om brahmyai namah: I bow down to Amma who presides over speech

Something to ponder over...
Everything is in God’s hands. You are not aware of it, but as you proceed through life, God is gradually shortening the reins. Finally, one day you realize that you cannot move another inch. At that point, when you are utterly helpless, you will feel God tugging at the reins as he begins to pull you back towards Him. You may at first put up a struggle, but you will soon find that the pull is of an unworldly power, and you have no choice but to surrender to His pull. It is at this point that you begin your journey back to God, the Source of your existence. This journey has to happen. You will inevitably find that you can’t do anything other than move towards God.: AMMA

Calming our mind!

674. Om brahmanyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is predominantly sattvic

I have always flirted with meditation. Tried it, shied away from it, wondered about it, regarded it as a tough one to befriend. So I was happy to read these thoughts on meditation by Amma:
"Children, when you sit for meditation, do not think that you can still your mind immediately. At first, you should relax all parts of your body. Loosen your clothes if they are too tight. Make sure that the spine is erect. Then close your eyes and concentrate your mind on your breath. You should be aware of your inhalation and exhalation. Normally we breathe in and out without being aware of it, but it should not be like that; we should become aware of the process. Then the mind will be wakeful.

"Children, don't try to still your mind by force when you sit for meditation. The thoughts will rise up with ten times their original force if you do that. It is like pressing down a spring. Try to find out where the thoughts arise from, and control them with that knowledge. Don't place the mind in any kind of tension. If any part of your body is tense or feels any pain, the mind will linger on that. Relax every part of the body, and watch your thoughts with absolute awareness. Then the mind will subside by itself.

"As you sit like that for a while, your mind will become calm. You can continue the meditation by focusing attention on your breath. Or you can start meditating on the form of your beloved deity. If the mind wanders, you should bring it back. If you are unable to do that, then it is enough to watch where it is going. The mind should be kept under observation. Then it will stop running around and will be under your control."

Egoless state!

673. Om brhatyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is immense

It's been one of those days when I've had to look heavenwards several times. And each time I know I'm asking, questioning. And therefore, when I read this, it made perfect sense. Like it was almost written for me!
"A true devotee completely surrenders to God. He longs for God to kill his ego. That he will not be able to surrender to God or that God won’t destroy his ego is a true seeker’s greatest fear. Look at the fierce form of Kali. Kali is the destroyer of the ego. Because a true seeker wants to be free from the ego, he will love this aspect of the Divine mother. Surrendering to Kali or to what she represents, a true devotee will happily offer his head to Her in order to add one more bead to Kali’s garland of skulls.": AMMA
Am I ready to surrender my ego? Am I ready to allow my head to be part of Kali's garland? I always pray to Amma to kill my ego but I always wonder if I'm ready for it. And perhaps that's why Amma sends so many lessons my way. Hopefully each lesson will take me higher up the spiritual ladder. And help me strengthen my resolve to become a better person. Like Amma would want me to be.

Living our life!

672. Om bhahmatmaikya-svarupinyai namah: I bow down to Amma whose nature is the union of Brahman and Atman

The numerous times I have looked at the greener side and wished it was mine! Amma explains it so beautifully and practically:
Children, learn to be content with what you have. Don’t desire what you don’t have or covet what others have. Don’t think that someone else’s pain is nothing compared to your own, or that you would feel much better if only you were in someone else’s shoes. This is not true. Each individual has his own set of problems and worries. You cannot exchange your troubles for someone else’s because you would not be able to bear anyone else’s pain. The same is true of happiness. You find that your neighbor is happier than you, and pray to God to be like him. Yet once you experience his happiness you realize that you actually prayed for the wrong thing. Your neighbor’s happiness and sorrows belong to him. By the same token, your joys and sorrows are yours alone. Realize this truth and be content with what you have. You cannot have more or less than what is intended for you. What you have is what is meant for you.
Here's wishing we all find the contentment we are living this life for!

Thinking of Amma!

671. Om vrddhayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is ancient

For all the times I have wondered if Amma ever thinks of me, or even remembers who I am:
Amma remembers you, not only you but everyone. How can Amma forget anyone when She is within them? Stop doubting and try to go beyond your limited vision. Don’t ask, ‘Do you ever remember me?’ Don’t think that you are physically away from Amma, or that you see Amma only once a month. These are only questions and doubts asked by your mind. Stop listening to your mind and you will feel Amma right there in your heart. Then you will know that Amma has never ever forgotten you, that you have always existed in Her and always will.
And an important one about our rememberance of Amma:
Amma always remembers you, but your remembrance of Amma is equally important. When you remember that you are Amma’s child, Amma’s son or daughter, Amma’s disciple or devotee, when you remember that She is always with you, that She sees all your actions and is your sole protector and guide, you are remembering the whole–you are recalling your real nature and true abode.

To be with Amma!

670. Om vasudayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the giver of wealth

I love this post in www.amritapuri.org from way back in 2002. A lot of us wish for a zillion darshans with Amma in a day and this man got caught. But what a simple, innocent response!

"During the large public programmes on the North Indian Tour, some people try to sneak in more than one darshan in a day. But although the crowds sometimes reach more than 10,000, Amma’s memory never fails. Often She will call someone on their mischief, and She’s even been known to give a spanking.
One night in Hyderabad, the darshan line was moving quickly. Suddenly, as one elderly man approached Amma, She stopped the queue. “You are coming a second time!” She accused. “You came this morning.”
The old man looked down. “Amma, I’m sorry. But I am a heart patient, and I don’t know how much longer I will live. I’ve already had two attacks. So I want to get as much from Amma as I can, while I am still alive. I came in Mysore and Bangalore and in Davangere. I have come here, and I hope to see Amma in Calcutta.”
Amma laughed and looked around at one of the swamis assisting Her. Then She pulled the old man in close and gave him what he had come for, a second time."

May we all have this overwhelming desire to be with Amma at all times. And may Amma make this come true!

A real prayer!

669. Om annadayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the giver of food to all living things

I needed to read this today. It's a post in amritapuri.org from 2004:

Amma says:-
“Only in the depth of pure silence can we hear God’s voice.”
“God is compassion. He is waiting at the door of every heart. He is an uninvited guest everywhere, because whether you call Him or not, He is there. Whether you are a believer or a nonbeliever, He is within you uninvited. Behind every form, behind everything, God is hiding. He beautifies things and makes them what they are. He is the hidden formula of life. But He won’t reveal Himself to you. You won’t feel Him unless you call Him. Prayer is the invitation. You must invoke Him through prayer and meditation. Chanting, singing and repeating the mantra are invitations, asking God to reveal Himself.”
“God is not confined to a particular body or place. There is not even an atom of space where He is not. Do not think that Amma is only in Vallickavu and is only this body. When you pray sincerely thinking of Amma definitely that vibration will reach Amma and reflect on Her mind. Your prayers and your pure and innocent sankalpa will bring Amma to you. Then you will feel Amma’s presence and peace.”
“Just give your mind to God; take refuge in Him, and you won’t lack anything in life. You will be given whatever you need. Your problems will be solved, in some way, and you will find peace. Those who pray to God and meditate on Him sincerely will not feel a shortage of anything that is essential. That is God’s resolve. It is Amma’s own experience. If nothing else, chant the Lalita Sahasranama (1,000 Names of the Divine Mother) daily with love and devotion. Then you won’t lack anything.”
What is Real Prayer?
“A real prayer will never contain any suggestions, instructions or demands. The sincere devotee will simply say, ‘O Lord, I do not know what is good or what is bad for me. I am nobody, nothing. You know everything. I know whatever you do must be for the best; therefore, do as you wish.’ In real prayer you bow down, surrender and declare your helplessness to the Lord.”
“To remember God, you have to forget. To be really focused on God is to be fully and absolutely in the present moment, forgetting the past and the future. That alone is real prayer.”

Just Amma!

668. Om dvaita-varjitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is beyond duality

“Anyone who has tasted prema bhakti — devotion with supreme love — even for a second, will never waver from it. But such devotion does not arise in everyone. Not everyone who enters a lottery gets first prize. That only goes to one person among millions. True devotion is like that; only one in a million will experience it.”: AMMA
My thoughts: I wish Amma grants me the grace to experience this beautiful prema bhakti, this intense devotion full of love. For then, like Hanuman, I will look for Amma in everything, in every situation. Then I can totally dedicate my life to searching for Amma. Then my entire life line takes on a different route and different meaning. What a wonderful and meaningful life that will be. Today I waste so many precious hours worrying or bickering about things. When steeped in prema bhakti, all I will think of all day, will be Amma. Losing myself in Amma consciousness, each word and thought will center around Amma. Everything will melt into the mundane. And all that will be left will be Ma, Ma, Ma! Perfect!

Moving towards a goal!

667. Om nir-dvaitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is without the sense of duality

A powerful quote by Amma which is relevant to everyone: Each time you act selfishly or angrily or greedily you are taking one more holiday, one more day of leave, from the state of perfection, from your eternal freedom.
I think back on all the times I have taken a leave of absence from the much desired spiritual state of perfection. Despite knowing this great truth, I sometimes willingly walk away from the eternal freedom I so desire. Because just for a moment, that anger, that greed, that selfishness seems worth it. But it's all so temporary, isn't it? What good can possibly come of an emotion that won't last long but will leave traces of dirt behind? Each of us battling our own demons. We all have our own set of issues. Why make it willingly worse for others? Let's work at spreading the happiness just as Amma wishes for us to do. In Amma's words:
My Mother, forever!

666. Om bhuma-rupayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the aggregate of all existing things

Found a dried rose petal from Devi bhava tucked away in my prayer book and had an emotional moment where I missed Amma so much, it hurt. I remembered how Amma showered us with rose petals and we all caught whatever we could, hiding it away, tucking it for a good memory another day. I held on to that rose petal as if for dear life, investing it with every memory of Amma. I was hoping it would perform a miracle and lo and behold! there Amma would be, but like I wrote yesterday, She's always there by our side. We just don;t have the spiritual maturity to realise it. I look for memories from Amma's last visit, every where. Whether it be the volunteer tag I hold on to or the earring I may have bought, they're all precious reminders of those fantastical 3 days with Amma when everything seems perfect and bliss is just a hug or a glance away. What is it that makes it all so right those days? For me it's the comfort of knowing that Amma is right there and so NOTHING can go wrong. But if we realise that Amma is divinity Herself, then Amma is definitely omnipresent. So why can't the rest of the 362 days be equally perfect? I definitely need to work at feeling that perfection every day. After all, why would my Mother let me down just because I'm not next to Her. She's my MOTHER. And no way will She ever give up on me!

My guiding light!

665. Om ekakinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the lone one

She is the lone one for me. My lone star in the sky, always showing me the way; always illuminating the path ahead of me. Always telling me quietly that everything is going to be ok, that She is always with me. I know Amma is always with me and that She is telling me what to do at all moments but sometimes, I forget to listen, forget to hear. Isn't that really how we conduct our lives? Most times we forget to awaken the divinity within us. Most times we forget to hear that pure inner voice. Amma always tells us that the divinity is within us. For me, it's Amma. I just wish Amma blesses me with the grace to always connect with this voice; to always have the ability to hear it loud and clear. May Amma bless me with the knowledge that Amma is always by my side and I never need fear anything. Because I have the divine power of the world guiding me on the right path.

Amma's life route for us!

664. Om loka-yatra-vidhayinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who directs the course of the worlds

I have stayed directed towards Amma today. I've also realised that when we steer away from the path Amma wants us to walk on, it is so easy to have so many negative thoughts. I want to have Amma's grace to have the strength of character to stay true to what Amma wants me to do. What is my higher purpose? May She always give me the strength to stay true to that. It is so easy to walk away from it but so difficult to keep to Amma's script. Amma's script requires us to rehearse hard in order to connect with our true nature. Our own script allows us to meander about. I want to walk through my life only on the route Amma has chosen for me. I've said this before and I wish this could become my mantra: Let every word I speak be what She wishes for me to speak. Every thought be Hers. Every thing I hear be what She wants me to hear. For my spiritual growth! And in this way, let me move from strength to strength. Only as Amma wishes for it to be!

From darkness to light!

663. Om aja-jaitryai namah: I bow down to Amma who conquers ignorance

When you start brooding about the past, when you start criticizing and insulting others and blame them for the mishaps that happen in your own life, when you plan and dream about a future of promises and forget to live in the present, that is when the law of karma starts operating in you.

There is so much ignorance on our part even when we are Amma's children. Or rather, it comes out more as ignorance when we are Amma's children and when we already have a satguru like Amma guiding us. We toss our faith about lightly and actually question Her. When something happens, we look heavenward and ask Amma: why me? When something happens we try to take control instead of realising the absolute truth that NOTHING is on our hands except a reaction to what is happening. Now when we do know that the wheels of destiny are moving, we really should leave it up to Amma to take total control. And for that we need to delve deep into our own self and reflect on why our faith is wavering. Once we are able to fix the source, we should reach a state wherein we can concentrate entirely on Amma. She is our Mother. Let Her and only Her take over everything and let Her lead us from untruth to truth. From darkness to light.

Om Amriteswariye namah!

My absolute everything!

662. Om asta-murtyai namah: I bow down to Amma who has eight forms

For me, Amma has several forms. She's my Guru, friend, confidante, Parent, counsellor, Doctor, Sister, Teacher, Goddess, Angel, Master. Some days when life seems a bit overwhelming, I cry out to Her and She listens. Some days when I enjoy myself, She adorns me with bouquets that fate throws my way. She is the voice in my head. She is my conscience. She is the one who holds my hand and guides me through routes. She is the one who stills my worried mind. She is the one who calms my thoughts and allows me to breathe. I am dust without my Mother. I am nothing. She is the name I wish to take each step with. She is the tear that needs to roll down my face. She is my life breath.

On service!

661. Om sad-asad-rupa-dharinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who assumes the forms of both being and non-being (sat and asat)

I was looking for Amma's quotes on service but I found an interesting site that had all these quotes on Service. And to me, these are like the bifurcated whole of what Amma teaches us:
  • "How can I be useful, of what service can I be? There is something inside me, what can it be?"
    — Vincent Van Gogh in Zen and the Art of Making a Living by Laurence G. Boldt
  • "Service is a sign of our active connection to Life."
    — Kabir Helminski in The Knowing Heart
  • "When we serve others, we gain more than hope. We gain energy."
    — Margaret J. Wheatley in Turning to One Another
  • "All acts of service are meaningless unless they are given with love."
    — Sai Baba in Wisdom from World Religions by Sir John Templeton
  • "He who serves God should be full of awe."
    — Swami Ashkananda in Shafts of Light edited by Sister Gargi and Shelley Brown
  • "Take note: Everything can be a resource for serving God."
    — Rebbe Nachman of Breslov in The Empty Chair edited by Moshe Mykoff
  • "I shall merely try to help God as best I can and if I succeed in doing that, then I shall be of use to others as well."
    — Etty Hillesum in God-Birthing by Michal Dwinnell
  • "Small service is true service."
    — William Wordsworth in Full Esteem Ahead by Diana Loomans and Julia Loomans
  • "Service was as much a part of my upbringing as eating breakfast and going to school. It isn't something that you do in your spare time. It was clear that it was the very purpose of life. In that context, you're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying, to keep doing the best you can every day."
    — Marian Wright Edelman in Open Mind by Diane Mariechild
  • "Gandhi was once asked by a friend if his reason for living in a village and serving the people there was purely humanitarian. Gandhi responded, 'I am here to serve no one else but myself, to find my own self-realization through the service to these village folks.' "
    — Mahatma Gandhi in The Fruitful Darkness by Joan Halifax
  • "There is a ripple effect in helping another."
    — Kathleen A. Brehony in Ordinary Grace
  • "Service has a life of its own. A single act of kindness may have a long trajectory and touch those we will never meet or see. Something that we causally offer may move through a web of connection far beyond ourselves to have effects that we may have never imagined. And so each of us may have left far more behind us than we may ever know."
    — Rachel Naomi Remen in My Grandfather's Blessing
  • "Whether I notice or not, I continue to benefit from the efforts and accomplishments of those whose bodies have long since disappeared. Their services remain and should be received and appreciated as granted."
    — Gregg Kretch in Naikan
  • "A rabbi I know devotes one day a week to simply being of service. She gets up in the morning and dedicates the day to God. She then leaves her home for the city close by and wanders about looking for ways to be of service to others. 'I have no plan for the day, other than to be present to what needs doing and to do those things I can without pride or prejudice. Sometimes I will find myself helping someone move into or out of an apartment, or sitting with the homeless, or walking tourists to their destination. The idea is to be free of any idea other than to serve, to befriend, to be kind.' "
    — Rami Shapiro in The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness
  • "The highest truth cannot be put into words.
Therefore the greatest teacher has nothing to say.
He simply gives himself in service, and never worries."
    — Lao Tzu in The World's Wisdom by Philip Novak
  • "Grace happens when we act with others on behalf of the world."
    — Joanna Macy in Frederic Brussat's Twitter Collection
  • "When I say that you should work hard,
All I really mean is that you should enjoy
    Doing good things for others."
    — Shantideva in The Tibetan Book of Yoga by Geshe Michael Roach
  • "One who lets slip by the opportunity to serve another misses one of the richest experiences life has to offer."
    - Pali text in Frederic Brussat's Twitter Collection
  • "Take a few moments to contemplate the question 'What gifts do I bring to share with my Earth family?' Go within and take an emotional scan or inventory of all the qualities that make you who you are. Be sensitive to the feelings of joy and passion that will accompany any authentic gift you have come to share. Today, commit to seeking new ways to open up the gift you are by sharing it with others."

Life lessons!

660. Om supratisthayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is firmly established.

Some words to live by, from Amma. Which means, I should be shortly going in for spring cleaning!
"Your altar is not just a place to keep pictures; it is a special place for your Lord to dwell. When you have this feeling, you can never be messy or unclean. Even if your house or your dwelling place is small, even if it is tiny, you should keep it clean. Try to make it serene like a temple. The surroundings should also be kept in the same way. Your room should be rearranged, reorganized, and kept clean in such a way that it should look like you are constantly waiting to welcome your Lord. The remembrance that ‘my Lord’ or ‘my mother’ can step in at any moment will certainly help you keep the room clean and tidy, for you will want to make it suitable for Him or Her to come in and be seated."
And this is an advice to really take to heart so that we never repeat our mistakes:
When you start brooding about the past, when you start criticizing and insulting others and blame them for the mishaps that happen in your own life, when you plan and dream about a future of promises and forget to live in the present, that is when the law of karma starts operating in you

Seeing the good!

659. Om sarvadharayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the support of all

Most times we forget the plot. That we're actually players on the same stage. That we're part of the same film. That we've all been written into the same script. We forget. And then arises all our negative tendencies of hatred, jealousy and anger. Even for people who follow Amma and are devotees of Amma, we falter every now and again. Our teacher's true teaching lies not in what Amma says but in what Amma does. She approaches everyone in a non judgmental way, full of love and affection. Similarly, we must also show love, understanding and  compassion towards everyone. When we hate someone, all we a re doing is tainting our own hearts with the dirtiest colors. And when we have a powerful Guru like Amma at the helm, we must always keep our focus on the good in everyone and in everything around us:

Drawing a parallel between the recent Ebola epidemic and hatred, Amma said, “The Ebola virus that spread over parts of Africa has become a nightmare for the whole world. It has wiped out thousands of humans. But the virus of hatred is killing more than any epidemic. The antidote for hatred is within us – love and kindness”.
“Humanity is said to be blamed for the occurrence of natural calamities. And it is a warning to us for to make corrections. Conservation of nature is one of the most important issues to be taken care of. We should imbibe the spirit of conservation and the values of natural co-existence of ancient tribal peoples,” she added. “One of the major contributions of India to the world was the concept of the number ‘zero’. We should add something more with zero; zero poverty, zero waste, zero illiteracy and zero crime, and be a model to the whole world.”

Dwelling on Amma's words!

658. Om iccha-sakti-jnana-sakti-kriya-sakti-svarupinyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is in the form of the powers of will, knowledge and action

Reminiscing the time Amma came here for Her Singapore programme. The absolute blissful 3 days of immersing oneself totally in Amma consciousness and enjoying every moment of being in Amma's presence. And after She left, it seemed to be ok for a few days. And then once again, the pall of everyday activities settles on me...and I ache to be in Amma's presence again. Not too far away though because I will have the good fortune of seeing Her again very soon! This time around I will just sit and pray and meditate on Her form. This time around I will plan what to say to Amma very carefully. I will hope that I do not get tongue tied! I will hope to soak in memories much better so that they can last me longer! And until then, I will ponder and meditate on Her everlasting words:
Those children who receive a mantra from Amma should lead a disciplined and orderly way of life.  They should give up bad habits such as drugs, smoking and drinking.  They should observe celibacy until marriage.  Even after marriage, they should follow Amma’s advice in living together.  Children, we should disclose everything to our guru and hold back no secret from Him.  The disciple must have the same love and attachment for the guru that a child has for its mother.  Then only can we have spiritual growth.  Japa and meditation should be practiced daily without fail.  Only by putting our mantra into regular practice can we benefit from it.  Book knowledge of agriculture is not enough; we have to apply it to get good crops.’  (Immortal Light)
‘To Amma, all are Her children.  In Amma’s eyes no defect of Her children is serious.  But when She is considered as the guru, it is essential for the growth of the disciples that they conduct themselves according to the tradition.  Amma will pardon all the mistakes of Her children, but nature has certain laws.  That is what brings punishment for our sins.  Children, we should be able to take any sorrow or suffering as conducive for our growth.’  (Immortal Light)

Touching so many lives!

657.Om yugandharayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the Bearer of the yugas

She always makes it right for us, doesn't She? We fret and we fume and we basically lose faith. But Amma will ensure that it's all sorted out for us. She never, ever lets us down. Which is why while attending a concert, I had the most incredible idea for Amma's next visit. It has nothing to do with a concert...and that's why I'm pleased as punch. For me it means that I am able to think of Amma at all times. It's a massive spiritual victory for me! Amma has truly moved away from the altar and is now a part of my being. I'm able to talk to Her when I go for walks and even in between lessons. How cool is that! This is a massive step for me. I am slowly getting out of the "Gods are only in shrines" mode to realising the omnipresence of Amma!
And here's a blog I chanced upon and so, so happy to read from it. Here's an excerpt on Amma:
"When I first came to Amritapuri, people in Oachira, one of the closest villages, had never heard of her. Last month, Amma was chosen by the Pope to represent Hinduism at a meeting of religious leaders.  The purpose of the meeting was to sign a Joint Declaration of Religious Leaders against Modern Slavery.  The pledge is to end modern day slavery by 2020. While Amma has been recognized by the international community for a long time, it is still a good example of the difference between the early days and now.
Amma, this daughter of a fisherman, has accomplished so much in her 61 years of life.  She is certainly a living example of the difference one person’s life can make.  I will be forever grateful for all that she has given to me, my family and the world."

Happy Mothers Day, Amma!

656. Om yoganandayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is the bliss attained through yoga, who enjoys the bliss of yoga

Happy Mothers Day, Amma! You are my Mother and the creator of not just Your children but the source of all the love and compassion in this world! You make us better people everyday. You work tirelessly just so we can have a good nights rest. You take on all our troubles only so we can be happy. You are the true definition of Motherhood!
From Amma's facebook page, a lovely story shared for Mother's Day:
"Once, when Amma was giving darshan in India, a youth came up to her. He lived in a part of the country that was ravaged by terrorism. Because of the frequent killings and lootings, the people in that area were suffering a great deal. He told Amma that he was the leader of a group of youth who were doing a lot of social work in that area. He prayed to Amma, 'Please give those terrorists, who are so full of hatred and violence, the right understanding. And for all those who have faced so many atrocities and have suffered so much, please fill their hearts with the spirit of forgiveness. Otherwise, the situation will only deteriorate, and there will be no end to the violence.' Amma was so glad to hear his prayer for peace and forgiveness. When Amma asked him what made him choose a life of social work, he said, 'My mother was the inspiration behind this. My childhood days were dark and terrifying. When I was six years old, I watched with my own eyes as my peace-loving father was brutally murdered by terrorists. My life was shattered. I was filled with hatred, and all I wanted was revenge. But my mother changed my attitude. Whenever I would tell her that I was going to avenge my father’s death one day, she would say, ‘Son, will your father come back to life if you kill those people? Look at your grandmother, how sad she always is. Look at me, how difficult it is to make both ends meet without your father. And just look at yourself, how sad you are, not having your father with you. Would you want more mothers and children to suffer as we do? The intensity of this pain would be the same for them. Try to forgive your father’s killers for their terrible deeds, and spread the message of love and universal kinship instead.’ When I grew up, people tried to get me to join different terrorist outfits to avenge my father’s death. But the seeds of forgiveness sown by my mother had borne fruit, and I refused. I gave some of the youngsters the same advice that my mother had given me. This changed the hearts of many people who have since joined me in serving others.'

"The love and compassion, rather than hatred, that this boy chose to pour into the world, stemmed from the wellspring of love in his mother. It is thus, through the influence she has on her child, that a mother influences the future of the world. A woman who has awakened her innate motherhood brings heaven to earth wherever she is. Only women can create a peaceful, happy world. And so it is that the one who rocks the cradle of the babe is the one who holds up the lamp, shedding light upon the world."

This spiritual journey!

655. Om yogyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who deserves yoga of all kinds.

How many spiritual miles we walk with the grace of Amma! With one touch of Hers, we are changed for life. We are protected, we are swathed in Her unending love. We are able to temper down our emotions as well as our reactions. All we care for is Amma. Our entire universe does a shift and the world begins to look different. All because one small lady with the power of the universe agreed to be our Mother! I am ever so grateful that we are Her children. Absolutely nothing in the world can parallel this. How much good karma we must have accumulated to be able to enjoy Amma's love and grace! How much good karma we must have to be under the spiritual protection of a great master like Amma! And since we are all spiritual aspirants, here's Amma's advice to us:
Your goal is to reach the state of perfection. Now the question is whether you really want it or not. Sometimes ‘yes’ and sometimes ‘no’ is out of the question. If this is your attitude, then this is not your place. There is no such thing as vacillation in spirituality. There is either ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ That is it. If you feel spiritual sometimes and non-spiritual at other times, that is not spirituality. What Amma means is that your mind should be fixed on that, i.e., the goal. There ought to be no distractions. It is dangerous if you simply let yourself be carried away by circumstantial distractions. Since your main purpose in life is to realize God, the awareness of the goal and intent to reach it, otherwise known as lakshya bodha, should always be present.

Blessed, grateful, thankful!

654. Om yogadayai namah: I bow down to Amma who bestows the power of yoga.

I do wonder sometimes about why people hurt each other. And what the consequences are of leaving a deep slash across someone's emotions. We leave a trail of hurt behind us so easily. A bad word here, a nasty comment there. We reflect our own dissatisfaction with the world in our actions. None of us are above any of this. Which is why the Miracle called AMMA becomes so special. She's been spreading the river of Her love for decades! She's never taken off on medical leave or just gone vacationing. For Amma, spending time in the presence of Her children is a vacation, I guess! And never will Amma hurt with even one harsh word. There is only sweetness in Her. She will never judge but counsel compassionately. Every word She speaks is clothed in the deepest of compassion and love. It's like She is an unending breeze of love. If only we could pick up a strand or two from Amma. Maybe for one day see only the good in everyone. Maybe for one day just leave our harsh words aside. And then finally we would do justice to Amma's divinity. She has manifested and taken birth as a human being only to teach us at a level that we will understand. To save us from the many pits we would willingly fling ourselves into. Thank Goodness that we are Amma's children. I'm blessed, grateful and thankful. I truly couldn't have asked for a better Mother to hold the shade of grace over my head!

Amma's teachings!

653. Om yoginyai namah: I bow down to Amma who is constantly united with Parashiva, who possesses the power of yoga

Very powerful messages from our divine master and awesome Mother!:

‘Many of us may have watched the waves at sea. They rise, then fall, then rise again, then fall again… and this cycle continues endlessly. It is the same with our experience of the world and its objects and relationships. We may find happiness, but this happiness will soon turn to sorrow. The sorrow that we feel will subsequently turn back to happiness but this oscillation continues endlessly. In order to maintain inner balance, we need to find peace within instead of depending on the external world.’
‘Set aside some time daily for reading spiritual books.  This indeed is also a form of satsang (holy company).  Have a book on your Guru’s teachings or a book like the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Bhagavata, Bible or Koran available for daily reading.  Memorize at least one verse from it daily.  In addition, read other spiritual books when time permits.  Reading the biographies and teachings of great masters will help us to strengthen the spirit of renunciation and to understand spiritual principles easily.  It is a good practice to take down notes while reading books and hearing spiritual discourses.  These notes will certainly benefit us in the future.’

Opening ourselves to Amma's grace!

652. Om vedya-varjitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who has nothing left to know

For today, I would just wish to dwell on Amma's words...
Now the mind is full of many thoughts accumulated from the different experiences of life. When thoughts increase, we will not get any peace regardless of where we are or what we have. When thoughts decrease we can find peace even if we are not provided with any comforts or facilities. Those who decrease their thoughts through practice can find peace regardless of the time or place. For them, the so-called world of chaos and confusion becomes an abode of peace and harmony. For others it remains like a hell.
If you do the work, you will get the wages. God will not simply give something to someone without their working for it. Self-effort and grace are interdependent. If tapas (spiritual discipline) is performed sincerely, you will see God’s grace flowing to you. Sitting behind closed doors and saying, “The sun is not giving me any light” is silly. Open the door and the light will come in. Likewise, open the doors of your heart by removing egotistic thoughts and by developing qualities such as love and humility. That takes effort. God’s grace flows in a never ending stream. You have to prepare your mind to become a suitable instrument and then receive it.

My best friend!

651. Om vijnatryai namah: I bow down to Amma who knows the truth of the physical universe.

She's my best friend. I refuse to rely on anyone.I refuse from hereon to depend on someone. I will only speak my mind to Her. I will only confide my problems to Her. She is the bestest friend I could ever have. After all, as a Mother, She will always want the best for me. So why look for a friend elsewhere when I have the best with me?!
And here's the perfect advice from Amma (I need to frame this and look at it for ever!):
When you find yourself reacting in a negative way to different situations, you should contemplate upon the workings of your own mind, remind yourself of the Goal, and then rectify your behavior. We should take every situation that comes in life as an opportunity for us to learn.
Yet another:
Once you surrender to your Guru or God, the past is like a cancelled check. From today onwards, live with alertness and walk carefully ahead on the path. You needn’t feel sad today, thinking about the dream you had seen yesterday. Try to forget everything, considering life to be a dream. Until now, we wasted time just for a few moments of happiness followed by sorrow. However, if we merge in the Supreme Truth, we can always experience Bliss. Even if all the people in the world were to love us, even then, we would not get an infinitesimal amount of the bliss that we get from God’s Love. Try for that Eternal Bliss in the time that is remaining.
From hereon my share of bliss need only come from the very source: Amma!

Om Amriteswariye namah!

Just pure love!

650. Om drsya-rahitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who has nothing to see

Look at this picture! I need not write a word because this picture is enough. We're each of us that little child looking up at our beloved Mother. Look at Amma's expression. Absolutely pure love, affection, compassion. It's now officially my favourite picture in the world! This picture encapsulates everything we feel towards Amma but sometimes fall short of words to describe!
Attachment to the Guru makes one detached from all worldly concerns and worries. It helps the spiritual seeker forget about the world and concentrate on God. The spiritual progress of a disciple or a devotee depends on the intensity of his or her remembrance of his Guru or God, which is also meditation; and this will culminate in total Oneness.
For a person who is established in God, all that happens around him is a play. The whole world is a play. All abuses, criticisms, insults, hatred and anger showered on him return unaccepted to those from whom they came. Whatever is not accepted is returned to the giver. Or another way of putting it is that a Realized Soul accepts everything. He accepts things, but they cannot remain with him. He is like a doorway; things just pass through him. Nothing can remain with him. Or you can say that he is like fire. What is thrown in the fire gets consumed by the flames and disappears.

A thousand pranams to Amma who I adore!

This spiritual journey!

649. Om adrsyayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is not perceived by the sense organs

Look into the eyes of a child. You can see God there. You can see your Krishna or Jesus or Buddha in the eyes of a child. But once the dormant vasanas start manifesting, the innocence will disappear. Vasanas are not completely absent in a child. They are there, but in the unmanifested state. If it is unmanifested, it must manifest one day or another. This is the difference between a child and a yogi. Even though there is innocence in a child, the child still has vasanas in the unmanifested state, waiting to manifest when the right time comes. A yogi, through spiritual practice, eradicates the vasanas completely. He becomes totally innocent, such that there aren't even any unmanifested vasanas lying dormant. The yogi has no vasanas to manifest because he kills the very source of them. He cuts out the vasanas by their roots, so they stop sprouting. He is clean and pure. He flows like a river, unhindered and unperturbed, into everything and without any difference.
I wish for me to reach a state where the vasanas are eradicated completely. But I know I'm very, very far from this form of self realization and spiritual attainment. The journey is long and arduous and in this birth we are meant, as Amma's children, to undertake this in order to remove our vasanas and kill the ego. Or rather recognise and realise how to control our ego. Thankfully we have a master such as Amma in our lives who can help achieve this.

Om Amriteswariye namah!

Staying on the path!

648. Om lila-klrpta-brahmanda-mandalayai namah: I bow down to Amma who has created and maintained the universe purely as a sport

It's been a day where I've really had to hold on to my faith. But I know that just around the corner, Amma is watching, looking out for me!
Many are interested in spirituality, but only a few will ‘make the grade,’ so to speak. Merely being interested is not sufficient. Intensity is what is needed. It is not the Guru’s fault. A Satguru cannot be wrong. He can only be right. You are wrong. We are like a musical instrument that is off-key. The Guru wants to repair the keys that are off. But if you protest, if you strongly feel you are all right, if you think there is no problem with you, that the ‘off key’ is all right because you don’t hear it as being ‘off,’ then what can the Guru do? In order to make the keys sound more pleasant to the ears, a little scratching, scrubbing, scraping and removing is needed. You should be able to bear the pain caused by this, understanding its purpose is to make your life harmonious, as in a musical concert.
There's always a reason...always! May we always have the ability to keep that faith, through every valley and mountain, through every path we take. Because, truly, Amma is always with us, holding our hands and guiding us along.

Amma's religion of love!

647. Om lopamudrarcitayai namah: I bow down to Amma who is worshipped by Lopamudra, sage Agastya's wife.

Something beautiful and thought provoking from Amma:
Mother does not say that you should believe in Her or in a God who dwells up above in the sky. Have faith in yourself, in your own Self. You think that only that which can be seen and understood is you, that is, the body, mind and intellect; but you are something more than that. To know or to study yourself is not merely to have knowledge of your gross body and other things associated with it. That which gives you power, vigor, strength and the effulgence of life is something different. Modern science calls it energy and our Ancient Sages called it the Self, or God. You cannot deny “Shakti.” In reality, it is there that your real existence lies. That is the real “you.”
The Self or God. Which means we are a part of Amma and Amma definitely lives in our hearts! She is our energy, Shakti, power, vigour, strength and everything required to take that next breath. Amma is the only truth I wish to know and that which I wish to live by. Sometimes I do wonder how anyone can live by any other truth. She is the most important part of our lives. We live in a more spiritual manner only because we live by Her love. A few days back I met a person who asked me if I was Amma's devotee. And he asked me what Amma's religion was. "Love," I answered easily. And his ease at that made me realise how easily Amma has spread Her love all over the world and made it a movement, a religion in itself. Nothing else we need to practise in this religion but being kind to each other and to spread the love. Just seeing our self in everyone. And thus inculcating a more compassionate mind. Perfect!

Sweet mother of mine!

646. Om satyananda-svarupinyai namah: I bow down to Amma whose form is existence and bliss.

This is one of my favourite songs. I had requested Bindu to sing this during one of Amma's visits to Singapore...and she had recorded it! With Mother's Day only 10 days away, I thought of this song today. A true tribute to our Dear Darling Mother who will always look after us:) (And click here for the original song). The lyrics truly are for our Amma, our sweet, sweet Mother!

Mother of mine you gave to me, all of my life to do as I please,
I owe everything I have to you,
Mother sweet mother of mine.
Mother of mine when I was young
You showed me the right way things had to be done,
Without your arms where would I be,
Mother sweet mother of mine.
Mother you gave me happiness, much more than words can say,
I thank the lord let me breathe with you, every night and every day.
Mother of mine now I am grown and I can walk straight all on my own,
I'd like to give you what you gave to me,
Mother sweet mother of mine.
Mother of mine now I am grown and I can walk straight all on my own,
I'd like to give you what you gave to me,
Mother sweet mother of mine.
Mother sweet mother of mine
