13. Om campakasoka punnaga saugandhika lasat kacayai namah: I bow down to Amma whose hair has been adorned with flowers like campaka
I read a poem and thought of Amma (for it could well have been dedicated to Amma):
She walks in beauty, like the night
of cloudless climes and starry skies
And all that's best of dark and bright
meet in Her aspect and Her eyes
thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.
And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Any mantra that explores Amma's beauty cannot stay specific to Amma's hair or Her face. For Her beauty is all encompassing. For me, Her beauty doesn't get defined by the campaka flowers that adorn Her hair. She is nature Herself. For She is the beauty of the campaka flower and the fragrance of every rose. She is the orchid that adorns a garland and the tulsi leaves that makes a garland spiritual and worthy of the altar.
For me, Her beauty is defined by Her stream of endless grace; by the fact that I could be in a darshan queue with a rich man and a pauper and for Her, it is all be the same. For me, Her beauty is defined by the fact that our clothes, our shoes, our bags, our bank balance - nothing makes a difference to Her. All Amma cares about is that She should reach out to Her children, tirelessly, every day, year after year.
How does Amma know what I want when I go to Her? Well, how does a mother know when a child is feeling hungry and what best to feed the child? For a mother's heart always knows. And therein lies the beauty. Truly, George Byron said it ever so well of Amma's captivating beauty: The smiles that win, the tints that glow.....A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!
